Sit N Go Short Stacked Strategy

In a nine player sit n go tournament which is the most common online tournament played in most poker rooms, there will come when you need to know how to play the short stack. Everyone needs to know how to play the short stack in no limit Texas Holdem, as everyone is bound to be in the that position sooner or later. The first thing you'll need to know is what is considered short stack, and although it differs for people a fair estimate is 25-50X the big blind. If your chip stack is 25-50X the big blind then you can consider yourself to be short stacked and you will need to do something about it. A good sit n go short stack strategy will work in all types of poker tournaments including heads up tournaments

The last thing to do is rush into the next hand you get and throw in all your chips hoping to double-up, because eight times out of ten you will lose when you do this. I've played a lot of online poker and it seems to me that when you go on tilt like this that you're bound to meet a big hand and lose your chips. So the first thing you need to remember is that you can't just jump into the next hand, you need to show some patience and wait for the next good hand you get. This is actually easier to do if you play multiple sit n gos at the same time.

At 50X the big blind you're not in to bad of a position and you can get away with calling possible winning hands like high suited connectors. You should try only limping into these pots though so you can see if you hit the flop and then if not you need to get out of the pot quickly. As you reach closer to 25X the big blind you will need to play even tighter, and basically you're options are to go all-in or fold. You will be losing a small blind and a big blind every time the dealer button passes once around the table so you will need to make your move soon. You want to make your move when you still have enough chips to make a difference if you were to double-up. There is no point doubling up only 100 chips because then you're still really short-stacked. You need to make your move on any marginal hand as your stack lowers, and sometimes you won't even hit a good hand and you just need to go all-in anyways and test your luck.

For the most part finding a caller when you're the short stack at a nine player sit and go isn't difficult at all, because there all trying to knock you out and get closer to the money. This is why you need to try and hold-off as long as you can to see if you get a good hand, but the time will come when you can't wait any longer for a hand and you need to just go all-in. No limit Texas Holdem has its risks and you need to be willing to take these risks in some tournaments when the cards are just not falling for you. This happens to everyone and you won't win everything so take it as you want and just move on to the next one.
