lee nelson deepstackFor the first time ever, a woman has won a major poker tournament at the Auckland Poker Room. The inaugural Lee Nelson Deep Stack Series Main Event recently wrapped up at the SKYCITY Auckland Poker Room and it was Angie ‘Ice Queen’ Fitzgerald who earned the first place win. She became the first female ever to win a major SKYCITY Auckland poker tournament, a great accomplishment.

The tournament began on Saturday with 108 players looking to earn the title. Many New Zealand tournament regulars were competing in the first ever Lee Nelson tournament and Lee himself was among the competitors. Others included Dan Sing, Mike King, Richard Lancaster, Brooke Howard-Smith, Simon Watt and James Honeybone.

Day one saw twelve rounds of play. After the day ended, King, Dunst, Watt and Honeybone had survived as well as eighteen other players including Fitzgerald. These players would return the next day for day two of play. It took until about 5:30 pm on Sunday for the numbers to drop to final table play.

The top eleven players would finish in the money and many players would start out final table play with caution as they wanted to finish high up on the money list. Just over 50 spectators lined up to watch the event play out. Players would begin day two at blinds of 1,500/3,000 with a 500 ante.

After about three hours of play on Sunday, fifteen players remained from the original twenty two players who began the day. At 5:20pm the final nine were named for the 2010 SKYCITY Lee Nelson Deep Stack Series Main Event and they came together to finish out the tournament.

Play would continue until around 12:30am when Angie would make her move. She went all in with a pair of fours and her competitor Simon Watt would call with Seven and five. The cards would give Angie four of a kind and this would be enough to beat Simon’s three sevens. Angie would take the title of the first ever Lee Nelson Deep Stack Series Main Event and she would earn recognition as the first woman to win a major poker tournament at an Auckland poker tournament.

SKYCITY Auckland is now getting ready for their next major poker tournament. The calendar has the SKYCITY New Zealand Poker Open up next. The tournament is scheduled to take place on June 5th to the 7th 2010. Hopefully Fitzgerald will compete in this tournament as well and continue her winning streak!
